This was my kid's halloween costume for this year: Captain Cutler from the old Scooby Doo cartoon.
The helmet is made of paper mache, wire, foam core, wooden hole plugs, plastic bendy straws and acrylic paint. I used a round inflatable "punch ball" from the dollar store as a form for my paper mache, and then when that dried, I made the collar from posterboard and foam core board. The diving suit is a gray cotton sweatsuit (pants and shirt) from Wal-Mart. He has two suits: a "clean" suit (the one he's wearing now) and his "zombie diver" outfit, which is covered in smudges of mud and hotglued with fake plastic vines that look like seaweed.
I'm a big fan of steampunk, and I think with a little more brassing up, this could be a really cool Captain Nemo prop. Turned out pretty in.' If you're looking for a Halloween costume, try this one. We won our local costume contest with this one. Suggestion: Glue a glowstick or green LED and battery pack inside the helmet for added effect.
